Because our loft has a super open floor plan, the dining room is really the first impression upon walking in so this rug needed to be beautiful and functional and I wanted it to be natural instead of a synthetic blend. Functional, for us, meant that it should be good at stain-hiding {it's the dining room - food spills happen} and provide a warm/soft feel for chilly nights.
I began the hunt in a few local stores but was either appalled by the synthetic smells or the steep price tags ... so I took my hunt online and discovered a mecca of awesome rugs on RugsUSA. Here's a few of my top favorites:
Some of the patches of cowhide are really long and soft and furry while others are shorter and more coarse - it adds such depth and interest. The stitching is gorgeously flawless.
I couldn't be happier with our new dining room rug and I think it would work equally well in our living room if I ever decide to switch things up. Great quality, price + service - I'm impressed! One more thing I enjoyed was that I didn't have to worry about how to get this massive rug home - shipping was included making it no-fuss.
And, pssst, RugsUSA currently has a 50% off sale going on right now so if you're in the market for a new rug, make sure you check out their selection! Have fun!

I really loved the traditional look of these faux-antiqued Persians. They have such a timeless appeal and I think they have the ability to blend well with most any decor. I was heavy into European antiques when we lived in Germany but our current loft has made me tilt back to mid-century modern aesthetics - I think these rugs would be a great balance.
I discovered the rug above on Little Green Notebook. The photos of the rug in her living room made me swoon like crazy and I couldn't stop picturing it under our antique French dining table. Doesn't it look so soft and sumptuous?

I've also long admired the beauty of cowhides and I was so tempted to order this amazing beauty:
The only thing holding me back was that the size wouldn't be quite large enough for our dining set. I like to be able to have all four legs of a chair still on the rug while dining and this pretty hide just wouldn't be large enough ... unless you placed it on top of a natural jute rug {which did cross my mind!}.
But then I spotted this gem:
I immediately loved the classic herringbone design - it reminded me of the wooden floors in many of the French b&b's J&I stayed in over the past few years which made me smile. And then, upon reading the specs, I realized that this pretty rug was made of patchwork cowhide. Swooooon. I loved that it was a natural rug and that the many different shades of hide would lend a depth and richness {and hide stains, holla!} which couldn't be achieved with other fabrics. My mind was made and I placed my order. Soon after, this beauty arrived at our door:

Isn't she sooo pretty??? I love that the smoky colors lend a masculine feel but the delicate herringbone design softens it up. I ordered the 7'6" x 9'6" size and it fits our table set perfectly. The rug was hand-made in India and is 100% cowhide.
